The AI program "Grok" developed by Elon Musk provided incorrect information about the mass shooting at Bondi Beach in Australia, targeting a gathering of Hanukkah celebrants on Sunday evening, according to experts.

The programs, known as "chatbots," provide users with instant responses when they request details or context about information and images, while tech giants have reduced the number of employees responsible for fact-checking.

On Sunday evening, a man and his son opened fire on a crowd gathered at Bondi Beach for Hanukkah, resulting in at least 15 deaths and 42 injuries.

This attack, described by Australian authorities as "antisemitic" and "terrorist," triggered a flood of information and images on the internet, particularly on the platform X where "Grok" is widely used.

"Grok" misidentified Ahmad Alahmad, who was considered a "hero" in Australia after a video showed him disarming one of the attackers. The man, who was seriously injured, remains hospitalized.

"Grok" claims these images match" an old widely circulated video showing a man climbing a palm tree in a parking lot," pointing to an "arranged event."

"Grok" identified Ahmad Alahmad, of Syrian origin, as an Israeli hostage held by Hamas for over 700 days.

When the program was asked about another scene from the attack, it incorrectly claimed that it was footage from Hurricane Alfred which caused stormy weather along the Australian coast earlier this year.

The program only acknowledged that the footage was from the Bondi Beach shooting after another user pressured it to reassess its response.

Following the incident, internet users circulated AI-generated images in attempts to prove that the event was "fake."

Experts believe AI can be useful for geolocating images, for instance, but consider it currently impossible to replace humans in verifying facts and explaining context.
