Lebanese President Joseph Aoun met on Wednesday at Baabda Palace with the newly formed Lebanese Cultural University Council in the World, emphasizing commitment to security, and stability.

“We are working through negotiations to establish security and stability, especially in the south, and negotiation does not mean surrender,” Aoun said. He stressed that his priority is to protect Lebanon from the specter of war, facilitate reconstruction, stabilize citizens on their land, revitalize the economy, and strengthen state institutions.

Aoun highlighted the crucial role of the Lebanese diaspora in promoting the country’s image abroad. “It is essential for the diaspora to portray the true image of Lebanon. Unfortunately, some convey a negative image,” he said, adding that “those who promote war have been exposed, as some thrive on conflict to influence elections.”

He also noted the positive impact of Pope Leo XIV’s visit on the nation’s perception internationally.

At the start of the meeting, former university president Abbas Fawaz praised the diaspora for its enduring support for Lebanon and its institutions.

During a recent conference attended by representatives from six continents, Ibrahim Constantine was elected as the new global president of the university with 90% of the votes. Constantine thanked Aoun for sponsoring the university and highlighted the diaspora’s vital role in strengthening Lebanon’s presence worldwide.

Aoun reaffirmed the diaspora’s right to participate in political decisions and urged citizens to rise above sectarian and denominational divisions. He also reassured the delegation that Lebanon’s security situation is stable and economic indicators are improving, in part due to the diaspora’s involvement.

Responding to questions, Aoun emphasized that negotiations for peace, particularly in southern Lebanon where Israeli attacks occasionally occur, do not equate to surrender. He also underscored the importance of presenting a positive image of Lebanon internationally.

“We work toward rebuilding Lebanon and ensuring it cannot head toward war,” Aoun said.

He concluded by praising the army and security institutions, reaffirming that the return of depositors’ funds is one of his top goals.
