United Arab Emirates launches nationwide health insurance system for citizens

A major healthcare reform driven by Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan aims to expand access, strengthen prevention, and future-proof the country’s medical sector.

On Tuesday, UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan directed the establishment of a health system that ensures the provision of comprehensive healthcare and medical services to citizens.

 

 

The new system is based on the launch of a comprehensive national health insurance framework covering all the Emirates, according to the Emirates News Agency.

 

 

Emirates News Agency indicated that “this announcement reflects the wise leadership’s commitment to ensuring easy access to high-quality health services for all citizens and to building an advanced healthcare sector based on preventive care, digital transformation, public health, innovation, and the sustainability of health services.”

According to Emirates News Agency, the new system aims to develop an integrated health model that enhances the efficiency and sustainability of health services, ensures the optimal use of health resources, and strengthens the health sector’s readiness in line with the highest international standards and best practices, to provide the highest levels of care for citizens, given that human health remains a fundamental national priority and a key pillar of the country’s comprehensive development journey.

 

 

In this context, Minister of Health and Prevention Ahmed bin Ali Al Sayegh stated that “the president’s directives reflect a national vision that places human health and quality of life at the heart of development priorities in the United Arab Emirates, as this system represents a strategic step toward establishing a more efficient, flexible, and future-ready healthcare system.”

 

 

He explained that “the United Arab Emirates continues to develop advanced health systems centered on prevention, sustainability, and innovation, ensuring the provision of comprehensive healthcare services to citizens in line with the highest international standards.”

 

 

Ahmed bin Ali Al Sayegh pointed out that “the health system in the country is based on an integrated federal and local model, supported by advanced infrastructure, interconnected digital health systems, and continuous investment in enhancing the quality of healthcare services and improving access to them.”

 

He emphasized that “the new health system supports the United Arab Emirates’ vision to strengthen the resilience of the healthcare sector, achieve greater integration across health services, and improve long-term health outcomes for citizens at every stage of life."
