While reports emerged late Saturday night of intense Lebanese efforts to establish a ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel in Lebanon, the Israeli escalation continues with ongoing airstrikes on villages in southern Lebanon and the Western Bekaa.

This morning, fighter jets launched raids on the southern town of Zawtar al-Sharqiyah and on Sohmor in Western Bekaa.

Artillery shelling was also concentrated since shortly after midnight around the towns of Zawtar al-Sharqiyah, Zawtar al-Gharbiyah, Yohmor, Arnoun, and Maifadoun.

The shelling also targeted the Maytam area located between the towns of Al-Nabatieh Al-Fawqa and Maifadoun, along with the Ali Taher forest at the outskirts of Al-Nabatieh Al-Fawqa, coinciding with intense air and reconnaissance flights over the region.

Israel

In an Israeli context, the Israeli Broadcasting Authority quoted a security source as saying: “We won’t stop drone and missile attacks even if we occupy the whole of South Lebanon.”

The security source added: “Deploying a protection network in South Lebanon to reduce the danger of drone launches is not sufficient,” pointing out that “a political breakthrough must be achieved while maintaining the deterrence prestige to change the reality in South Lebanon.”

Meanwhile, the Hebrew newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth reported that “the Israeli army is considering expanding the ground war in South Lebanon in the absence of an Israeli solution to Hezbollah’s drones.”

In this context, well-informed Israeli sources reported that understandings with Lebanon include discussions on establishing a military coordination mechanism under American supervision.

It is also mentioned that the military coordination mechanism is scheduled to be discussed in early June, according to what the Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported on Sunday.

According to Israeli sources, this mechanism is also expected to include intelligence cooperation.

It noted that, in practical terms, this amounts to continuing the war within the restrictions imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump, which prevent Israel from bombing Beirut and the Lebanese Bekaa, while allowing it to continue attacking Hezbollah targets in South Lebanon.

Hezbollah Operations

According to statements attributed to Hezbollah and reported by media sources, the group said it detonated a series of explosive devices targeting four Israeli bulldozers that were attempting to advance from the direction of Rashaf toward Haddatha.

It also stated that it targeted a gathering of Israeli military vehicles and soldiers on the outskirts of Haddatha with a rocket volley.
